I finally traced the problem down to me (not very surprising). I'd also 
reconfigured exim so could send mail via localhost. So what I did was 
revert to the old config file and cut and paste the bits in that 
specify my smarthost etc.

Works fine.

Yeah the .forward does look scary doesn't it. I think how ever I'll 
leave it alone, but you never know what revision avoidance may cause me 
to do.
