Making the assumption that it's SuSE 7.3 or 8.0 that you are suing 
then it should be compiled in already.  But, it's a good idea to have 
a look anyway...

cd   /usr/src/linux
make xconfig

and have a good look round in there for a while.  If it tells you that 
xconfig won't work do something like 'xhost + locahost' or the other 
way round.
