RE: [Sheflug] Re: Broadband help

The Alcatel USB modem does work very nicely but you have to be a bit
more complex if you want to share your link with other PC's
I use the SMC ADSL Barricade and yes it does have an internal hardware
firewall. Mine is blocking all ports and logging all attempted incoming
connections and nothing has got through in the 6 weeks that it has been
connected.
It literally took 15 mins to install and I can share my net connection
with any PC on my network, even out in the garden on wireless (grin)..

Richard,
I assume you are saying that the above offered modem would not
be a good
investment. I've had a look at the links you gave on your first email
and
noted your comments. The SMC Barricuda seems a good offer. it gives the
impression a firewall is built in and the price compares favourably with
the
straight ASDL modems. Plus it has the capability of allowing my son to
use
his machine via a network card I assume to this box, to use the same
connection. I've had a look at the security link you gave, does this
setup of
iptables etc give me the same security on a straight ADSL modem as you
would
get with the SMC router/modem with built in firewall. Is there any point
in
getting a router/modem hardware if I don't wish others to share my files
over
the net?
You mention BSD, are you saying I will have to use a second
computer to use
as a firewal (can you use a seperate partion on your computer dedicated
to
BSD for the firewal?)
Peter
