[Sheflug] Help required - lost files

Last night my machine (SUSE 7.3) died & had some fsck failures on start-up. I
am not too familiar with this situation (the box has run for 3 months
without a reboot since I converted from Windows to Linux!) but I seem to have
lost my kmail inbox, which is a bit annoying. Fortunately, most of my email
is directed to other files as it arrives & these are OK, but it would be nice
to recover the inbox as I had flagged some things for further work.

The only thing in lost+found seems to be a pdf file which I had just
downloaded - though this is unreadable by Acrobat. The information reported
by debugfs seems to confirm this, but given my inbox is also missing I am not
sure whether I can trust this report & there may be other stuff which has
gone astray.

Is there anything likely to be left of the inbox which I could recover?

I have also discovered that during installation my /home partition was set up
as ext2 (obviously my mistake as I had intended to use reiser). Is there a
simple way to change this & is this recommended?

Thanks for your help in advance - learning all the time!

Bob Holland
