Slackware ... latest is 8.1 ... it's about as simple as a distribution gets,
and is still going strong. You should be able to get a base install in not
much space, certainly less that SuSE will do (which does have a large
footprint).

I'm sure there are other less well known ones out there as well that could
do the job as well :)
