There are a few working nodes
http://www.consume.net/nodedb.php?pos_x=435771&pos_y=388881&action=recenter&;
old_scale=25&scale=50&old_size=480&size=480&Submit=Go%21

check out the green ones. - they are providing services.

They are not to many point to point links yet - I suppose the density of
nodes need to increase a little first. It seems you can get good line of
site connectivity with 802.11b - so if you can see a node point at it and
see if you can get services. There is some software called netstumbler that
runs on windows allows you to scan for 802.11b networks - I don't know of
an equivalent Linux software, maybe ethereal could do it with the correct
802.11 patches - you could sniff for the beacon frames?

PS if you are interested in the consume model in sheffield you could
subscribe to the consume sheffield mailing lists and request an ip range if
you are thinking of building a service providing node
