Not sure if you can get a shell during the SuSE install, but anyway. It would 
be helpful if you could get a shell then cat /proc/pci to find out what the 
controller is and cat /proc/ide/hda/model to get the IDE controller name and 
the drive model. That's a good starting point. See if it's possible to 
manually fsck from a rescue disk (a single floppy distro like er, I forget, 
Tom's something or other :). e.g. fsck /dev/hda1
Then I would recommend checking SuSE errata, have a quick Google for the
IDE controller/disk model and see if it's a known problem.
