Are you running slackware? It's a problem I always have when I first install 
slackware and try to log in to kde as a normal user. I think you'll find that 
if you log in as root the sound will play ok. All I did then to get it to 
work for a normal user is "chmod 777 /dev/dsp". Oh and make sure you have the 
correct module loaded too (just in case you didn't know).
