I did a test on an old P200 IBM pc a few weeks ago and it worked very well, discovering all the hardware corrctly.
Personally I prefer to build my own systems that way I can be sure that Linux supports all the hardware. I've been happily using SuSE since 7.3 on my current Athlon XP1800 system and it works Very well and correctly detected all my hardware.
