Proxies only support certain protocols. If ports 80 and 443 are open, then
you have to be sending HTTP requests. It won't make sense to it to allow any
old stuff through. For that, you need NAT (aka Masquerading).
Have you opened port 110 for POP3 traffic, and port 25 for SMTP traffic, on
the proxy machine, and set the default gateway on the client to the proxy
server? If not, then this is probably your first port of call. I don't know
much about the newer Debian stuff (I still have 2.2r7 for the little I use
it) but on Mandrake and SuSE you can specify a systemwide proxy setting which
will sort out the necessaries for you.
