[Sheflug] Linux Boot Process

Hi all, I'm struggling to understand the Linux boot process.  Then i
realise I know nothing of the pc boot process except a few rote learnt
incantations.  This is no good.  Therefore.
Whats it all about?  -  pc's booting that is.
How does Linux lever the boot process?
And in particular I have a bootable CD from http://www.locustworld.net of
the meshAP.  This boots a 2.4.18 linux kernel into a ram disk on PC and
turns any old wi fi equipped machine that meets the hardware spec into a
mesh routing wireless access point.  This is pretty groovy. Unfortunately
my PC's don't boot from CD :-(

Any pointers
