".rtf" usually indicates a "Rich Text Format" (RTF) file.
This is Microsoft's one concession to an (approximately
at least) Open Standard.
You are likely to find the editor "Ted" (nothing to do
with me, though) on many Linux distributions (it is certainly
in SuSE), and this is tailor-made for RTF.
