[Sheflug] Dell X200, Redhat 8.0 and driver loading order

Dear All,

An update on progress with my Dell X200 and Redhat 8.0

I have up-graded the kernel to 2.4.20-2.40 and have a working internal
modem with Jan Stifter's pctel driver, still logging onto Freeserve but
using wvdial instead of minicom. (In fact this was the case with kernel
2.4.18-14).

I can now mount the CD-RW in the media slice, play audio CDs (when the
modem isn't being used) and read CDs (haven't tried writing to CD yet)
BUT I have to remove the sbp2 module and then re-insert it. During boot
up, the CD-RW vendor and model is not identified and I still get an
error logging into sbp2 device. With the earlier kernel, the CD-RW
vendor and model was identified (although I still got an error logging
into sbp2 device and couldn't mount the drive).

Could it be that with the earlier kernel, the order in which the drivers
are loaded is different?

If so, how can I change this? It seems that the sbp2 module has to be
loaded after ieee1394 and ohci1394 for the CD-RW to successfully mount.

I know that the situation has greatly improved since first getting hold
of this machine but it would be nice to be able to access CDs without
having to be root, removing modules and re-inserting them.

Thanks for any advice,

Nicola.
