Steve,
If it's any consolation, I tried the same download installation about a
month ago with similiar problems. I did eventually after several
attempts, manage a minimum install and got the rest of the programs via
download afterwards. However, the hardware detection was poor, lot of
hangups etc. I have in the past found SuSE good but via cdrom install.
Perhaps try CheepLinux for a CD. Used to be about a £1 or £2 only. Could
save a lot of hassel.
Peter
Thanks for that reply Peter.
I did also after a number of attempts (about 13 I think) manage to get an
install finished - at around 3AM the following morning.
Unfortunately, as my mail server occasionally tells me, 'It didn't work out,
Im giving up'.
I found the hardware detection bordering total madness!!
It found my Radeon 8500 card correctly, and also my IIyama VM Pro 512
monitor settings and frequencies. But when I set the resolution I wanted to
use (1600x1200 @ 100Hz refresh), which is well within the capabilities of my
monitor, it locked up the system and I had to reboot. Each time that
happened, it found one or two more errors in the file system because of an
unclean shutdown. It also did the same thing at much lower resolutions :(
With such good capabilities on my monitor, I could live with other
components not necessarily detecting/installing correctly, but not that.
Ive decided to ditch SuSE for the time being. At the moment, Im back to the
drawing board as it were, looking at some other distributions to try out.
I tried RedHat once before, but as a relative newcomer, the install options
and sheer number of packages was too overwhelming. Ive also tried Mandrake,
which had very good hardware detection, but again, the number of packages
was off-putting.
The next thing Im gonna try is one of the smaller ones, maybe that fits on a
single CD like Peanut, or another I saw called CoolLinux. Apparently
CoolLinux lets you build a complete system, but only with the specific
hardware and software that you want, and then enables you to build an
install CD based on those selections.
I do have a 1 Meg cable modem for downloading, so again, any recommendations
would be much appreciated.
Steve.
