How about trying Knoppix? I've never tried it myself, but I've only ever
heard good stuff about it. It's based on Debian, and was designed to be
given out for people to try out on their home systems (it was actually a
show giveaway at LinuxTag, IIRC..). The hardware detection is supposed
to be *very* good - perhaps you could give it a whirl and report back?
