Both Mandrake and RedHat have free versions which are identical to the
ones you can buy. These, along with SuSE, are regarded as the most
newbie friendly, as it were.

SuSE used to do an evaluation version, although that seems to have gone
by the by of late. If you would like a single disk version of RedHat or
mandrake, I'm sure I, if not someone else, can rustle one up?
