You could take a look at the linux emporium http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk/ they have a cheap cd section.

I'd say debian dvd's are the way to go but is a bit of work for a first time and sadly lacks openoffice (in the current stable release)
With the pace of linux I'd definatly go for a newer release as things are moving fast.
