Being let down is always annoying.  I wasn't condoning people letting
you down, and if it came across that way then I didn't mean it, sorry. 
However, very few people get paid to organise socials, so you're not on
your own there.  You're also not on your own in being let down.  I have
been the 'let-downee' (yes, it will make the OED next print you'll see)
on many an occasion.

On a lighter note, hopefully more people will be able to go if it's not
on such a difficult date again.
