Sorted!

Now the machine has got a SUN keyboard (onthe back it says model type 5 c) 

The keyboard has some uk type symbols on it &pound; but when i type in KDE I get
a hash , the hash is replaced with the \ , which is where  " is where the  [at]  is
etc.  Tnough when  I type in a plain tty (no kde etc ) everything is just dandy.

Which config file needs changing ?
