We are using SuSE on the servers and on the (dual boot)desktops . We plan on
using SuSE 8.x on a new server (dual processor + 1Gb RAM) to provide desktop
services to a number of recycled 486 66 and up machines as ltsp clients.
Groupware and mail services provided in platform neutral way by the horde project
This will give
1. a sustainableinfrastructure not dependant on grants or external funding, as
we make use of the everyday junk richer more corporate type people throw away
2, A scalable infrastructure in that as organisational needs grow we areable to
supply those services through free software without having to be held back by
propriety license contracts.
3. A skilled and trained work force ready to provide key services in the South
Yorkshire digital economy.
Current projects involve
a. using 3d modelling software to develop better wheelie bins
http://www.blender.org
b. Using HostAP and MeshAP to build a scalable, affordable , sustainable
community network infrastructure
c. developing content management tools for community information networks
d. Anything else we can think of..!

We're not religious about Linux, (well not always!), as work needs to be done
not talked about how it could be done differently. But Open Source IMHO is a big
part of it. Whats important forus is that services are provided in a
compatible standard way thats open - so we can share with anybody and don't get
locked into into deals with single providers
Currently asking dumb questions about sparcs and debian. As thjey seem to have
a decent distro for a sparc ( all the rest seem quite old), and I've got an old
sparc at home. Which I'm trying to learn about NIS on also. see previousposts
from me, for the projects mentioned above.
