Sorry Dave i wasn't clear there

*      : *     :passwd.byname  : port

*      : *     :passwd.byuid  : port

Deny access to the maps from unpriveliged ports

commenting them out fixes the problem and restarting ypserv fixes the problem

ypcat -k passwd showed that root could read the map file, but an ordinary user 
not
