[Sheflug] Acer laptop (a bit long!)

Hi all,

Mandrake Linux 9.1 now installed on my Acer Travelmate 422XC laptop :-)

Although.... at this time, it doesn't seem completely happy.

Video: The machine has a Radeon Mobility 7500 system, for which there is no
entry in the configuration. I initially selected the "ATI Radeon" option, but
later changed to Radeon 8500. This seems more stable - i.e it shuts-down
properly!.

Networking: Working eventually - the control centre is weird in this respect
- configuration changes don't seem to take effect until I've change several
times - and then it seems to generate a new 'profile' on its own accord! At
least it talks DHCP and gets an IP from the Uni's network - eventually!
Networking to my computers at home no-go atm.

Sound: Really weird! Works under Gnome, but not KDE. Well actually, if I
alter the sound configuration in KDE it works for a while, but stops
again when the machine is next rebooted (or if I log-out and log-in again).

USB: According to the "control centre", USB should be working, but
plugging-in a USB mouse is unsuccessful. Oddly, the control centre recognises
the fact that there /is/ a USB mouse - it just doesn't work! I have no other
USB devices with which I can test it.

I've observed that during boot-up, all the various processes start, but just
before the desktop starts, there is a huge mass of data output (stack?) which
suggests to me that something is decidedly unhappy!
There is also a "Code: Bad EIP Value". I have found references to these in
the system log - but I haven't a clue to their meaning!

During shutdown, all the processes end o.k., apart from NMB server (a red
'Failed' appears, then toward the end of the shutdown, it reports that
filesystem /proc cannot be ended ("in use"). Again, something that worries
me!

In General: Not so sure I like the way KDE is heading - although it's
certainly tidier than in Mandrake 8.1.

But I *do* like the new Gnome desktop - both the look and the methods. :-)

A strange problem has occurred a couple of times in Gnome - on attempting to
launch an application (e.g. Galleon), it /appears/ to start - a button
appears on the bottom panel, which then disappears after a couple of seconds!
This continues to happen until I shutdown and restart the machine.

I'd be very grateful if anyone could shed some light on any of these
'misfeatures'. It looks like I'll be bothering you again at a meeting
sometime soon! :-)

Sorry this has been a long one!

TTFN!

Ruth
