Well... I use qmail these days, so I know I could do summat like this using
something in a $HOME/.qmail file like:
| wavplay <whatever>
or some wrapper round wavplay. You may be able to do something with postfix/
exim/sendmail's .forward processing. This way it then becomes completely
MUA independent (the MTA will trigger the alert), but may require some
reading/investigation to find out what limitations there may be.
You could even knock up a quick C / shell / perl program to check your
mailspool and have crontab run it every few mins etc etc. Again, this would
be MUA independent. There may be a version of biff/comsat that could do
this (I've not done any searching).
MUA independence has the advantage of you only ever needing to set things
up in one place, which always helps configuration :)
But some ideas for further investigation / thought anyway.
