I spent quite a bit of time working with squidguard- though that was as
a redirector for squid. Used some iptables rules to redirect web-traffic
over to port 3128. 

I stayed away from dansguardian, for reasons which escape me right now.

The squidguard lists are not perfect, and at the time there was no
straight forward way to submit corrections - though there were only a
few sites missed; the main problem was false positives (this was used in
a cybercafe)- but overriding these in a white list was trivial.
