Situation recovered (fortunately). I originally thought the whole lot
had corrupted. I couldn't get anything to attach to the DBM. It turns
out (I think) that it had got locked, although I don't know how.

Stoopid as it sounds, a reboot of the server has cured it.

Yes, I wrote a little PERL proxyauth (squid config) command to
validate users against an DBM and put some simple PHP pages together
to maintain the userlist and permit password changes.
