You could check if the kernel module is installed.
lsmod
you should see nvidia
also you could comment out the glx module loading just to see if it will
start up without it.
If you want to catch all the errors you can do 
startx 2> xerrs.log
and ctrl alt backspace to exit X...

You could check:

and make sure the links and file dates look right.
