I have a no-frills unbranded Brooktree 848-based TV card which does the
job quite nicely using xawtv. As for what people actually /recommend/,
that I can't say :) It depends how much you want it to do in the long
term, but I can watch TV and have xawtv write out to mpeg (IIRC -- it's
been a while since I actually used it, but it got heavy use when I was
at Uni many years ago :) ). But as far as I'm concerned, it does the job :)
There was also some software that did teletext capture which was quite
good; I'll have to try and dig it out and get the blighter up and running
again.
