...scrub that; I've found the problem. Having an alias of "ls --color" for 
ls, thus causing every line output to have a chunk of escape sequences to 
set the colour for the line (even though there was no colour to set, and 
all it was doing was ESC[0m to swtich colour attributes off), causing cpio 
to look for files named "ESC[0mrrn.123456.1ESC[0m".

Insight provided by running hexdump over the ls output and me going "doh".

Alias since changed to ls --color=auto ... should mean I don't get tripped 
up it again.
