hmm, yes, at least I still have a working machine...

thanks very much; I don't think I can make it though as my parents are
visiting and they aren't as interested in linux as I am...perhaps the
June meeting (I can probably live without a scanner until then:-)
 
btw I tried your suggestion of symlinking /usr/src/linux but something
deeper is broken to mess up depmod/modprobe.  I guess I could try to do
what I did again and make a more careful note of which files were
written by make dep; then read the manuals and try to repair things
again.
