[Sheflug] find unknown ip address of device with known mac address
I've just had the misfortune to be installing an adsl router that was
shipped with an incorrect instruction sheet. The config software comes on a
CD for windows and the router can be configured via USB. Which is OK if a)
it works and b) you have a windows box.
So I had to configure it via its web interface via the LAN socket. Which
would have gone OK if they'd told me the correct default IP address. I
tried 192.168.7.1 which was in the instructions but it wouldn't work. So I
started at 192.168.1.1 hoping that it wouldn't be long before I found the
correct address. Fortunately this one worked but what if I'd had less luck?
I thought you could use arp and rarp to find the ip address of a device
who's mac address you know but under suse arp and rarp return "command not
found".
Any help appreciated.
