Thanks for the quick replies guys. Actually I saw a Nikon Coolpix 2000
in Comet for £150. Being a bit of a camera buff myself I didn't expect
to really see Nikon at under 2 ton. I now have a very itchy credit card
and a Coolpix 2000 in my sights ;-)

BTW, thanks to Alex for his hint on the media reader - since the Nikon
takes very cheap flash memory cards it would make sense to have a flash
reader sat on my desk and so avoid having to faff about plugging the
camera in & out - the USB connector doesn't look all that rugged!
