I just joined the digi brigade too! My Olympus Camedia C220 is not
recognized by the GUI digi camera apps in MDK 9.1 just as yours isn't,
aThis is because your clever camera is actually a USB mass storage
device. As you can access the files on your camera the USB mass storage
module is doing as it should. Digi cam apps like FLPhoto use the GPhoto
libs, which recognise the propriatary camera comms & data formats but
not cameras which present themselves as ordinary storage devices.
A nice upshot of this of course is that you can upload files to the
camera to copy elsewhere if you don't have a CD burner.
You can simply copy the files off to where you want to put them using
the file manager of your choice or alternatively write a little script
to mount the camera then copy all files to, say, /home/camera, then
unmount it again.
BTW if anybody has the same camera as me & has trouble getting it
working with Linux I can offer a tip or two.
