[Sheflug] symlink or $PATH?

Hi

I've recently installed Gentoo Linux and I've found that it sometimes puts
things in strange places (e.g. /opt/) as do some other apps. What I tend to
do with these programs is to add symlinks to them in a directory which is in
users' $PATH (e.g. /usr/local/bin/) instead of adding the new directories to
everyone's PATH. Someone told me that I shouldn't really do this and should
add the new directories to everyone's PATH (I can't remember why he said
this, but there was a reason).

AFAIK it makes no differnce to the system which way you do it, but wanted to
know what is the 'right' (or least-wrong :) way of doing it.

Cheers

Tom
