[Sheflug] Web servers again...

Thanks to the esteemed members of this group I sorted my page redirection
problem.

I now have a different snag.

We have aprox 100 staff, in 20 odd groups who all edit (or should edit)
their groups intranet pages. I am not
100% sure how I am going to allow them read/write access to the files, as
editing off site is something I am being
asked for. However samba, ftp (web based behind ssl is my thought) or
possibly webDAV.

So I think the ownership of the edited files will end up being the member of
staff. The Group being the group of that
staff member.

So, if I set the permissions to be rwxrwxr x on the files we can just about
get away with it.

I have a php script which is designed to be run as the 404 error handler to
create thumbnails of graphic files. As this
script runs on demand, it needs write access to the whole of the web space.

So, I am looking at

a) can I make this one script run as root?

b) make whole web folder chmod 777?

c) attempt to create a user that is a member of all groups, but is not
root.? (there are about 40 groups in total)

Am I right in thinking you can not put groups into groups? (This is how we
got round the problem on NT).

Although there should be no local access to this box, it may happen in the
future, which is why I would like to avoid the 777
route.

What are the pros and cons to this?
