Linux on a Psion Series 5/5MX is quite good, they're cheap second hand on
eBay and merely need equipping with a decent sized compact flash card or an
IBM microdrive. There's picogui if you need X support, or blackbox if you're
feeling a little more extravagant, they run ssh well enough and it has a
decent usable keyboard.

I have a Series 5 that works fine with Linux, although requires a hard reset
when the batteries fail, so install ARLO and the kernel onto a small
partition at the beginning of the compact flash card.
