In this sense it does relate to the predominent use on SPARC.
Probably this was to help shove more Intel Solaris support out.

I disagree with that sentiment here. Sun have given SCO money for
some IP however they are not singing from the same hymn sheet overall.

This is true in certain circumstances where switching is straightforward.
Some large customers will appreciate being able to standardise their OS.

Sun absolutely have to learn that GNU/Linux is not going anywhere.
Equally Solaris is unlikely to dissappear because it is backed by vender
liability and commerical support from a centrally controlled source.
Sometimes customers really do want these things Sun has to offer.
A Solaris system is basically unusable without gnutools anyway so it might
as well be called GNU/Solaris from my point of view. :-).
