Re: [Sheflug] ADSL with static IP

Hi

This isn't technically a Linux question, but I'm sure you guys will know the
answer.

I'm thinking of setting up a small webhosting venture, but BT broadband only
offer a dynamic IP addressing system. As far as I can tell from their
(highly uninformative) website I can only get a static IP address if I go
for one of their expensive business options.

So, I'm looking for a reasonable (I'm currently paying ~£30/month) ADSL
supplier which offer a static IP address. I've found one with Freeola
(www.freeola.com/broadband/) which looks promising, but I'm reluctant to
change without some feedback from people.
I use Zen Internet for my ADSL line, been very happy with the service. http://www.zenadsl.com/ I think it is.

I get 8 IPs as standard, you can get more if you pay, the various options are listed on their website.

If you really are interested in setting up webhosting services, you might want to look at colocating a server. I do some work for ServerSure, based in Chapeltown, 25 quid a month for the standard service, that might be more suited to your needs? (www.serversure.net)

Broadband SLAs aren't ideal for hosting either, I seem to remember the Zen one saying something about if you're not willing to accept potential downtime, ADSL isn't for you. If contention ratios become an issue, that might also undo any good work you've started.

Regards,

Jonathan
