[Sheflug] Launch of the 1st Sheffield cafe scientifique
University just sent this round, I thought this could be a
forum for a talk on Linux/Open Source/IT ethical issues
(if anybody knows anybody to give such a talk).
Cheers, Jan

Subject: Launch of the 1st Sheffield cafe scientifique
Date sent: Wed, 01 Oct 2003 15:59:03 +0100
The first Sheffield cafe scientifique will be launched next Monday at
7.00pm at the Showroom Cinema, Paternoster Row (tel: 275 7727,
www.showroom.org.uk)
Alongside Leeds, York, Nottingham and others, Sheffield now has its
own cafe scientifique. A cafe scientifique is a place where citizens
can engage in conversation with scientists. Every first Monday of the
month, you can come to the Showroom bar (free entry) and have a drink
while you listen to a short talk by leading scientists. After a break
to refill your glasses, you will have the opportunity to question the
speakers about their work and the ethical issues that some of the
science might raise. The cafe provides a chance to learn more about
science, a chance to have your say, a chance to debate.
The day: Monday 6 October
The time: 7.00pm (talk will start around 7.20pm)
The topic: "Stem Cells: will Superman ever fly again?"
The speakers: Professor Harry Moore and Dr Jonathan Draper from the
University of Sheffield
Many hopes are put in stem cell research to treat diseases, from
multiple sclerosis to damaged heart. Will these 'magical' cells
really save us all? What are the alternatives from their embryonic
origin?
