[Sheflug] SuSe 9
As promissed, after loading SuSe 9 on my laptop yesterday at the Lug meeting,
here are my first impressions.
Installation completely non-problematic. It loaded onto the laptop without the
need to do anything except fine-tune the graphics setup. Every additional
piece of hardware - ISDN card; Network Card; Printer; Scanner - picked-up and
configured without a problem.
Using Yast simple NFS network set-up as quick as I could type 192..... There
is a host of new modules in Yast including Samba client and server (Don't
have a windows machine to test with). This combined with the 'local network'
(read Network Neighbourhood) setup should make dropping your laptop into any
network a breeze.
KDE 3.1.4 no suprises. Open Office 1.1 with the OO quickstart is lighting fast
and OO is well integrated into the file system. Suse button menu is a laid
out with a bit more logic than in the past.
Online update is working already - 3 whole updates including True Type Core
Fonts await you.
The only problem encountered is the SuSe help centre which hang-fires when you
click the Icon. The centre will load ten minutes later when you have forgoton
what you wanted to know anyway.
There is an interesting gadget called Suse plugger which controls devices on
the desktop.
Using it on a Celron machine it is evolution not revolution. Should be
interesting to see what you guy's with 64bit AMD's think of it... perhaps
thats where the '8 to 9' jump lies. Vague impression that there has been a
bit of a rush to get 9 out around the release of 64bit AMD. 9.1 might be the
release with the polish.....
What ever, all in all can't wait to get in on my desktop - Richard?.
