Just tried that with the download from cr.yp.to/
It states that I need daemontools first but that fails compile. Is there a
DNS in a binary version out there that a newbie could install? Or even me?
;0)
Dan Bernstein (DJB) writes standards-compliant software in the way that he thinks they should be written. 90% of the time he's right but it does mean that his software never installs like anyone else's..

Installing DJBDNS itself is dead easy. Daemontools is a bit "why do I need this?" but it makes sense. There's a guide to installing them at
http://www.hackinglinuxexposed.com/articles/20020716.html

Personally I like DJB's software. The first thing I do when installing a new server is delete BIND and Sendmail then install DJBDNS and QMail. The first two are stupidly complicated and full of security holes, the latter two are simple, work and are secure. They take a bit of effort to learn to install, but save on effort learning to use them.

I don't know much about other DNS servers (anyone else?) but Freshmeat.net would be a good place to look
