What else would you do other than upgrade/install a new distro once
support of the one you are using has been withdrawn? I suppose you could
install all the apps from source when security updates are released -
that would involve a lot of work though and I don't know I would want to
do it for everything.

The suggestion of upgrading/installing a new distro was mine. I think it
would be far better to do that now than when the server is in the colo
and being used!

I'm sorry but I really don't understand what you are trying to say. I
made the point that Fedora is essentially a new project, and I wouldn't
want to test it out on a production server. You answered with 'or a new
project' - I don't get your meaning here. Would you like to elaborate?
