RE: [Sheflug] Errors on eth0

Thanks to all that replied, it enabled the performance to be vastly
improved.

Short story .. was the Cisco 2621 was incorrectly configured to run a 10mb
1/2 duplex.

Long story ..

I replaced the original nic with a 3c905 .. still no improvement.

In the /var/log/messages were some errors about

Nov 20 15:12:39 clownerouter kernel: eth1: Transmit error, Tx status
register 82.
Nov 20 15:12:39 clownerouter kernel: Probably a duplex mismatch. See
Documentation/networking/vortex.txt
Nov 20 15:12:39 clownerouter kernel: Flags; bus-master 1, dirty 383060(4)
current 383060(4)
Nov 20 15:12:39 clownerouter kernel: Transmit list 00000000 vs. c448f300.

Checking Documentation/networking/vortex.txt from the kernel source

It mentions the message saying that this is to do with incorrect duplexing
settings.

downloading and compiling the network diagnostic tools from
http://www.scyld.com

enabled me to check and set the duplexing. Still no change though

The line is BT SHUK LES 10. Reading the documentation for it showed that if
it runs at full
duplex the network kit at each end needs to be full duplex. A call to the
bods who manage the
2621 got that altered and its far better now ( I've just got 8Mb/s of
bandwidth )

The fact that Linux is open source with such a wealth of community
information means that
its very easy to solve otherwise difficult problems.

Its the second time in the last month Linux has helped us here ( we're a
windows shop otherwise )

The MS Welchia worm was destroying some other DSL links we have. By being
able to configure an
old PC as a network bridge with a modified kernel to do packet filtering
(as in http://bridge.sourceforge.net/docs/Firewalling%20for%20Free.pdf )
This was then placed in line with the DSL modems, and filtered the worms
scanning traffic,
without any other networking changes anywhere, and took about 2 hours to set
up.
This actually managed to impress the windows heads on site as it was
something
they couldn't envisage windows doing at all.

Thanks

Alan Dawson
