[Sheflug] Mandrake Linux 9.1 Problems
Good Morning,
Last night my machine crashed (probable cause a reboot last week, when the
file system didn't get repaired - don't ask!! phone rang and I just missed
the message, then it was too late, but it all appeared to come back OK).
This time I saw the message and when I got it back up, everything on my
desktop had gone, no icons, no wallpaper, nothing. I took the decision to
re-install everything again, increasing the partition size to around 15gb.
I am now back to a basic working system, email/internet connection and DVD
playback working. My questions are:
1>. How do I force a disk check.
2>. How do I defrag the drive? (when the time comes)
3>. What should I backup? Can I save important files to another partition (I
have NTFS amd FAT32 available but can't work out how to save files to them,
my permissions must be all wrong.) Just a copy of all of the RPMs and
Tarballs I have downloaded would do (see below).
Note: I have a Plextor IDE CDRW as Hdd - but hadn't got round to working out
how to use it yet.
I will probably upgrade (probably a fresh install) to 9.2 this evening,
hopefully this will cure my problems with Mandrake Update.
Still having fun, I do tend to learn by my mistakes!!
Thanks
Steve
