I don't know much about win XP  but I think windows firewalls install there own 
kernel packet filter driver.  So zone alarm is different to kerio PF. 
 
AFAIK Linux firewalls all utilise the kernels own packet filtering 
capabailities using the standard user space toolkit iptables or ipchains from 
http://www.netfilter.org  ( does this make all Linux firewalls Turing 
equivalent ? ) 
 
What you get is just a different UI to manipulate those tools.

tail -f /var/log/messages 
may help you there.  You'll see dropped packets logged.
