POP3 is a protocol designed for retrieval of a list of messages residing
within mailboxes and is used by users typically on dialup connections.

IMAP is a protocol used for stateful remote mail access and mailbox
management with the ability for multiple simultanoues access etc.

| What are the benefits and can you set it up on a single user home system?

Increased flexibility and the preservation of your read and unread mail
status and so on. Install either courier-imap or uwimapd server.

Tell it to talk to either of the above server software which you
installed after deciding which is right for you.

I personally use courier because I disliked UW last time I tried it but
that might have been 4 years ago or something so maybe ok!

| how??

There are packages for many distributions as there are for quake1 and
quake3 is also available.
