[Sheflug] Bootup Screen Problem

I'm currently setting up Gentoo Linux on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 8500) but I'm having a few problems with the boot screen.

When I have used other distros, to increase the resolution of the boot screen it was simply a case of adding vga=xxx to the 'kernel' entry of the grub or lilo configuration file.

I thought this was fairly standard for ANY distro.

My Gentoo has installed ok, but all I get at startup is a basic VGA text screen; no colours or splash image; no tux in the top left corner.

I have a feeling it is something to do with framebuffer settings in the kernel config, but I've just about had enough trying different settings and recompiling.

For information, I'm using 2.6.1-mm1 kernel and the video device is the Nvidia GeForce4 4200 Go.

I've done a manual config/compile of the kernel so there is no initrd entry in my conf file (grub).

Can anybody help me at least get tux back ?

(The Gentoo forums have a number of long and rather confusing posts about this, and using 'bootsplash' program to assist, but I can't actually see a definitive answer).

TIA.

Steve.
