Well I've had a look at the Gentoo forum on this one already. Unfortunately, as you read further and further through it, it seems to have received some contradictory statements about the procedure detailed there; thats why Im a little reluctant to go that way.

On a positive note, I tried a few more kernel recompiles and have obviously got something working as I can now use the vga=xxx variable and tux does indeed pop up in the top left corner when booting. He stays there until the part where it says 'Entering runlevel 3' and then disappears, which I suppose is what should happen. The magic number for my screen size and type is actually vga=838; and that looks very crisp!

Gary, one thing I did have to do though, (which may take some time depending on what is already installed) is to do an emerge 'nvidia-glx' AFTER the kernel compile. It is worth it though when you look at the end result.

I'll post the relevant kernel settings and xfree settings hopefully this evening (In the middle of compiling kde right now).

If anybody has any experience of 'glxgears', I'd appreciate your thoughts on that too. I seemed to be getting ridiculously high results from it earlier! The feeling I got from reading the Gentoo forums is that people seem to use it as a quick and dirty graphics benchmark/test.

The best thing about this l-o-n-g install for Gentoo, is what you have at the end of it. This 2.6.1 kernel is booting hellishly fast and is very very snappy indeed. If kde compiles as good and runs as fast as the rest of it I'll be well impressed.

On a slightly separate issue Gary, did you ever manage to get 'emerge' to install the packages from disk instead of downloading them all first ? Can't get that to happen for the life of me....

Steve.
