I had a look in the BIOS, not sure what I touched, but it was then full screen, though still at the same resolution.

Wandering round the net though I realised it maybe to do with agpgart. So I modprobed that and atyfb and I think I'm almost there. dmesg reports:

agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 149M
agpgart: Detected Intel 440BX chipset
agpgart: AGP aperture is 64M @ 0xe0000000
atyfb: using auxiliary register aperture
atyfb: 3D RAGE Mobility (PCI) [0x4c4d rev 0x64] 4M WRAM, 29.498928 MHz XTAL, 230 MHz PLL, 50 Mhz MCLK
Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 80x30
fb0: ATY Mach64 frame buffer device on PCI

which looks good apart from claiming it's a pci card, which worries me. anyway my consoles are now mostly white with only a small area visible and the vsync is buggered, but I can access all the modes I want. If I use vga16fb It's great, but I can't get into the higher modes vesafb doesn't want to play at all.

Should it report it as an AGP card, if so any ideas as to what to change
