Thanks for that.  I've tried SmartFTP but it although it will SITE CHMOD 707
a file or directory it won't SITE CHMOD -R 707 a directory.

I have a feeling it will be a case of somehow using FTP to get a list of all
the files and then passing this list to a script that will CHMOD them all
individually.  Any suggestions?
