Thanks to all those who have enlightened me on this.  Looking back I think
its been me getting overly paranoid about a couple of XP boxes that were
rebooting themselves randomly 2-3 times per day.  I've heard certain viruses
can cause this to happen and as I'm not using the most expensive AV software
(its free, but up to date) I was worried something may have slipped through.
I'm going to suggest that one user tries Knoppix to see if it still reboots
itself (which might then point to a possible hardware/memory issue).  If she
gets on OK with it I'll then see if she wants some flavour of Linux
installing permanently.
